VA Tightens Eligibility for Assisted Living and Home Health Benefits
Obtaining the Aid and Attendance non-service
connected pension benefit, for veterans and surviving spouses, can help the
claimant age in place in the least restrictive setting, be it in their home or an assisted living facility.
However, this important benefit is more difficult to obtain,
according to reports from across the U.S. which indicate that the VA is
tightening eligibility rules.
Karen McIntyre of the Veteran's Information
Services, Inc. that "some VA Adjudicators are delaying or denying Aid and
Attendance (A&A) for some claimants who are living in Assisted Living or
who are receiving Home Health Care."
No longer is merely being admitted to an Assisted
Living Facility (Facility) is an automatic ticket for A&A benefits. Additionally, the claimant's home may lose its exempt status if the claimant enters
an ALF.
