Where were the Democrats, standing up for the rights of veterans, and the frail and elderly?

The Senate passed The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, by a 50/50 split and the deciding vote was made by then Vice President Cheney, who returned especially for this vote, from abroad. The Democrats were up in arms about this Act, reducing Medicare/Medicaid by billions of dollars. However, where were the Democrats, standing up for the rights of veterans, and the frail and elderly? If they fought for these people rather than Bankers, Insurance Executives, Financial Executives, things may have been different.
