The Elder Law Office of David Wingate and Hospice of Frederick County Present April 19 th Workshop: Talking About Death Won’t Kill You
Talking About Death Won’t Kill You is a workshop designed to highlight the importance of discussing a sensitive, and sometimes difficult topic, our own death.
“We encourage everyone, including those who are healthy and in their prime of their lives, to think about and document care treatment preferences before a crisis,” states Laurel Cucchi, Director, Hospice of Frederick County. “It’s vital to document your end-of-life wishes in the event that you are terminally ill or critically injured and unable to talk or communicate, and thus helps ensure your loved one, and healthcare providers know how to honor your care decisions,” she explains.
A recent study suggests that increasing the number of cancer patients who have end-of-life discussions could save the U.S. over $75 million a year without compromising care.
Yet, less than one-third of all adults have a living will or any kind of “advance directive” to make their healthcare wishes known in the event of catastrophe, studies also show.
“No one likes to think about the possibility of a life-threatening injury or disease,” says David Wingate. “But the simple act of having these conversations, of creating an advance directive can turn out to be an incredible gift for loved ones in the event of an accident or severe illness.”
